One of Our Readers Chimes In

Declaration of Independence A friend of mine, Jim Newell, has been paying close attention to the political scene and he wanted to share a few observations on this blog:

"I have been recently studying the Constitution and its history and the men who helped devise this amazing document.

"We need to get back to the genius and viewpoint that these men had. The times they came from were rough and tumble times. The government persecution from the English to the Colonists then are vaguely taught in the schools of today.

"The courage of our Founders and patriots then are something we should instill in ourselves and in our children.

"Anyone who says the Constitution is a flawed outdated document is not an educated American and should not be in ANY government office or position."

Jim also references a speech by patriot Samuel Langdon before the Massachusetts legislature in 1788:

"On the people, therefore, of these United States, it depends whether wise men, or fools, good or bad men, shall govern…. Therefore, I will now lift up my voice and cry aloud to the people….

"From year to year be careful in the choice of your representatives and the higher powers [offices] of government. Fix your eyes upon men of good understanding and known honesty; men of knowledge, improved by experience; men who fear God and hate covetousness; who love truth and righteousness, and sincerely wish for the public welfare…. Let not men openly irreligious and immoral become your legislators…. If the legislative body are corrupt, you will soon have bad men for counselors, corrupt judges, unqualified justices, and officers in every department who will dishonor their stations…. Never give countenance to turbulent men, who wish to distinguish themselves and rise to power by forming combinations and exciting insurrections against government…. I call upon you also to support schools in your towns…. It is a debt you owe to your children."

Thank you, Jim, for those insightful words and that superb quote! And what an incredibly brave and caring group of individuals our Founding Fathers and the other patriots were.
